Field Trip Mysteries giveaway!

Saturday, August 1, 2009

Beth tells me that posting a screen grab of my Wordle doesn't count as a post. I'm not sure I agree with her, but to be on the safe side, since I promised two more posts this week, I thought I'd better drop another post.

And, since it's Saturday night and I just got paid, I'm going to make this the first-ever giveaway on the Exile! (The second-ever giveaway will happen pretty soon, by the way. Stay tuned.)

Up for grabs today is a complete set of the first season of the Field Trip Mysteries. That's one each of The Zoo with the Empty Cage, The Painting That Wasn't There, The Village That Almost Vanished, and The Teacher Who Forgot Too Much. To enter, just leave in the comments* a short memory of the best school field trip you've ever been on. The winner will be selected at random.

Get your comments in by this time next Saturday, August 8, to enter. Open only to residents of the U.S. and Canada. The Field Trip Mysteries are published by Stone Arch Books. RL: 1.7 - 2.4; Guided Reading Level: M.

*If you're reading this on Facebook, please come over to the Exile itself to comment. Thanks!

My best field trip was to Winnipeg, Manitoba. We went to a gigantic swimming pool and to a restaurant where french fries came with gravy. That would have iced it, but I haven't gotten to the best part. The best part was the science museum in Winnipeg, which had a big room entirely tiled with mirrors which included the floor and ceiling. Because of the floor mirrors, you had to take off your shoes and put on felt boots. Once inside, they had some beam lights (we called them "lasers", being kids) which reflected off into eternity. You could just sit down and see all those millions of yous disappearing into the endless repetitions of reflections, but the best part was the felt boots.

My year in school always had field trips canceled on us due to funding issues. (I know, I'm still whining about it 20 years later.) The best one I went on was one that was a group of students, but funded by the people who went. We flew from the Midwest to Washington DC in 7th grade. We were away from home without parents, stayed in hotels, and traveled everywhere in buses. So fun. We saw the Hard Rock Cafe, Kennedy's grave, the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, the White House, and we were there when the Holocaust museum was just being built. It was an incredible trip. (I returned this year and saw the completed Holocaust museum and it is heartbreaking and so very well done.) I loved that trip.

My best field trip was the time I visited the sewage treatment plant in Manhattan with my Environmental Science class in college. I know, that sounds gross, but it was actually really interesting and informative and I learned so much - like how every time it rains the sewage system in NYC can't handle it, and raw sewage goes untreated into the Hudson River.

I don't remember so many. i lived in a small town in Southern Minnesota and when we went on field trips we drove up to Minneapolis and St. Paul. It was very fun to be in the big city. When i was young we went to the science museum. I especially loved carding wool and making yarn(or perhaps that is the only thing I remember). And in high school the humanities trips took us to the Guthrie and to the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and Rudolph's to eat.

The best field trip I never went on was in high school. The band members conducted a fund raiser by selling chocolate to our parents to subsidize our trip to someplace in Virginia, to an audience I could careless about. I was all packed up with my shoes tied tight when some ass clown whose name escapes me told me to skip the trip. He "knew" some chicks who wanted to "hang out." Needless to say I hung back and heard stories about drunken high school debauchery including a Mulchinsky doing cartwheels down the hallway. As for me, the ass clown got "sick", the girls never materialized and I'm still paying for those damn chocolates. Son-of-a-Bitch

My best was as a parent chaperon but all the kids would have agreed: a trip to the UPS building at the airport! A group of 4th graders got to see every aspect of what happens to the packages, where they're weighed, how people pay, how all the freight is moved around, etc. Then to cap it off they all got to tour a cargo plane and sit in the pilot's seat.

My best field trip memory is one I planned myself . . . to Medieval Times. I don't know what I was thinking, but I arranged for the whole senior class to go. We had a good time, eating with our hands and watching the jousting, and everyone made it back to school at the end of the day.

Being from southern Virginia, our first big field trip was to Jamestown and Williamsburg in fourth grade. I still remember the glass blowers at the old Jamestown settlement, and taking an ox cart ride down Duke of Gloucester Street in Williamsburg. This was also my first trip with my Polaroid camera, so I have vivid memories of snapping photos and waiting for them to process before putting them in my pockets. I ended up going to college in the 'Burg nine years later, so I guess that trip really did stick with me.

A totally late answer, and not to win any copies of those fine looking books ;) but here's my contribution:

I took my Spanish class on a Whole Foods Field trip! The prior day we had learned all about fruits and vegetables so it seemed appropriate to go! Of course this was a true test for the teacher when I found myself drawing a blank on how to say eggplant and zucchini! HA!

The end result? A Shopping cart full of strawberries, cherries and some amazing double chocolate chip cookies!
